"The saw itself isn't bad."

I always have had good luck with Poulan Pro motors also. Never got tired pulling that dang starter cord! I have cut several without any issues. I've included photos of what I took down. Good torque, I can't really slow it down.

And as I said, I don't front as an expert. The chain did indeed have 57 links. I found the starting instructions superfluous. It is nice to have for stumps however. But so far does a good job for small jobs!
